Caitlyn + Patrick’s engagement session was one of my favorites to date. They chose us to photograph their wedding after a phone call earlier this year and we wouldn’t have gotten to meet before their wedding had it not been for this sweet session. Cait and Pat live in Chicago, and with families in Virginia and California, they knew they wanted a destination wedding, and what is better than a wedding in the #1 City in the world?!
Engagement sessions are important to me, and when Cait told me she wouldn’t be able to come down to Charleston before the wedding I was a little heart broken. Let me tell you why they’re important to me so y’all can understand why I was so upset- most of our collections include engagement sessions complimentary. (but why?!) They’re MY way to get to know Y’ALL before your day. I can’t capture you or do your job to the best of my ability if I don’t know what makes you tick, what makes you laugh, and most importantly if you’re not comfortable with me and my crazy jokes and being in front of my camera. I think sessions with your photographer prior to your wedding are SO important to really form that connection. So the closer we got to their wedding date, the more I knew I had to make something happen- so I texted Caitlyn to see if they’d be up for a session the day they flew in from Chicago before meeting friends and family for dinner and I was so excited when I got that text that said “YES WE WOULD LOVE THAT!”
We met right in front of Husk and the Mills House Hotel, about a half hour before their dinner and walked around Church Street and Chalmers for a 20 minute mini session chasing the beautiful light. My first clue that these two had a great sense of humor came when Caitlyn looked at me and said "I forgot my engagement ring in Chicago. I'm having a friend bring it tomorrow but for now I have this beetle ring that I just fell in love with and bought". We definitely embraced that fun beetle ring and I have no doubt that they'll laugh about it for years to come every time they look at these pictures.
Let me tell you, I love engagement sessions but this one felt so different in the best way. There was something about them finally realizing that they were getting married in two days that made things extra sweet, so many smiles, so much love filled their eyes and we got to capture such tender, precious memories in those short twenty minutes. This was the day that “day before sessions” stole my heart, and I recommend them so much to any couple that is having a destination wedding that can’t make it to their destination city before the big day.
We talked, got to know each other, I showed them around my beautiful city, found pink walls and shot a lot of film. I can’t help but look at these pictures and smile because I can just see so much of Caitlyn and Patrick’s personalities and love in it and that’s what my job is all about (oh, and a really cool guy on a yellow bike photobombed us and it might be my favorite picture of the bunch).
